If your agency pays agents on a tiered (sliding) scale, you can build that scale in Rex and let Rex work out each agent's commission automatically. This replaces the spreadsheet many agencies keep alongside the CRM, and it means the figures live in Rex where they flow through to your reporting.
This article explains what an Agent Sliding Scale is, the terms you will see in Rex, and how the pieces fit together. For step by step setup, see Financials & Commissions: Setting Up an Agent Sliding Scale.
Who Can Use Agent Sliding Scales? 🔒
- Australia and New Zealand only. Agent Sliding Scales are not available in the United Kingdom.
- The feature needs to be switched on for your account. If you cannot see Agent Sliding Scale under Settings > Finance & Commissions, contact Rex Support and we can enable it for you. There is no extra cost and it is not restricted by your plan.
- Building a structure is an administrator task. You need access to Rex settings to create a sliding scale and apply it to an agent. Agents themselves do not need any additional access, they simply see the correct percentage on their commission worksheet.
Key Terms You Will See in Rex
- Agent Sliding Scale - a commission structure made up of two or more tiers, where the percentage an agent earns changes once their running total passes a threshold.
- Tier - one band in the scale. Each tier has a from amount, a to amount, and the percentage that applies within that band.
- Commission period - the window over which an agent's running total is measured (for example your financial year). You set both the length and the start date.
- Running total - the commission the agent has accumulated so far in the current commission period. This is what determines which tier they sit in.
- Earning trigger - the point at which a listing's commission starts counting toward the running total, set on the structure using the only calculate listing when it reaches setting.
- Starting amount - an opening figure you can set per agent, so an agency moving to Rex part way through a commission period does not start the agent back at zero.
- Sliding Calculation / Fixed Calculation - the two modes an individual agent allocation can use on a commission worksheet.
How Agent Sliding Scales Work
There are three stages, and the first two are one off setup.
- An administrator builds the structure. Under Settings > Finance & Commissions > Agent Sliding Scale, you add each tier with its band and percentage, set how long the commission period runs and when it starts, and choose the earning trigger.
- An administrator applies the structure to an agent. Under Settings > Finance & Commissions > Agent Defaults, you assign the sliding scale to each agent it applies to, along with a starting amount if you need one.
- Rex applies it on every listing. When an agent allocation is added on a listing in Finance Mode, Rex checks the agent's running total for the period, works out which tier applies, and calculates the commission at the right percentage. You do not need to do anything per listing.
⚠️ Please Note: Sliding and fixed structures can be used side by side. Some agents can sit on a sliding scale while others stay on a flat percentage, so you do not have to move your whole team at once. For flat percentage structures, see Financials & Commissions: Commission Structures.
A Worked Example: Commission Across Two Tiers
Say your structure has two tiers:
| Tier | Band | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | $0 to $100,000 | 50% |
| Tier 2 | $100,000 to $200,000 | 60% |
An agent has accumulated $90,000 toward their running total this period. A new listing settles with $20,000 of gross commission allocated to them. Because that allocation crosses the $100,000 threshold, Rex splits it:
- The first $10,000 sits in Tier 1 and is calculated at 50%, giving $5,000
- The remaining $10,000 sits in Tier 2 and is calculated at 60%, giving $6,000
- The agent's commission on this listing is $11,000
Rex does this split automatically. You can see the working by opening Show calculation breakdown on the commission worksheet, covered in Financials & Commissions: Using an Agent Sliding Scale on a Commission Worksheet.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is this available in my region?
Agent Sliding Scales are available in Australia and New Zealand. They are not available in the United Kingdom.
I cannot see Agent Sliding Scale in my settings. Why not?
The most likely reasons are that the feature has not been switched on for your account yet, or that you do not have administrator access to Rex settings. Contact Rex Support and we can check both.
Can some agents be on a sliding scale and others on a flat percentage?
Yes. Structures are assigned per agent under Agent Defaults, and both types stay available.
What happens when a single listing pushes an agent into a new tier?
Rex splits the allocation across both tiers and calculates each portion at its own percentage, as shown in the worked example above. You do not need to work out the split yourself.
Can the top tier be open ended?
No. Every tier needs both a from and a to amount, so the highest tier needs a ceiling. Some agencies set a deliberately high to value on the top tier so it is never reached in practice.
We are moving to Rex part way through our commission period. Do we need to load our historical listings?
No. Set a starting amount for each agent under Agent Defaults, which is the commission they have already earned this period. Rex adds new allocations on top of that figure, so their running total is correct from the first listing without any historical data.
