A Commission Structure tells Rex how to work out the gross commission on a sale, so you do not have to enter the same figures by hand on every commission worksheet. You build the structure once, then apply it to worksheets as sales come through.
This article covers creating a structure, the base fee options, adding tiers, and previewing the result before you rely on it.
Who Can Create a Commission Structure? 🔒
Creating and editing commission structures is an administrator task, because it lives in Rex settings. Agents do not need any additional access, they simply see the calculated commission on the worksheet.
Commission Structures or Agent Sliding Scales?
These two features sound similar and do different jobs:
- A Commission Structure works out what the agency earns on a sale. Its tiers are based on the sale price.
- An Agent Sliding Scale works out what an individual agent earns. Its tiers are based on the commission that agent has accumulated over a commission period, so the same sale can pay two agents different percentages.
Most agencies use both. If you pay agents on a tiered scale rather than a flat percentage, see Financials & Commissions: Introduction to Agent Sliding Scales. Agent Sliding Scales are available in Australia and New Zealand only.
How Do I Create a Commission Structure?
- Go to Settings from the left side menu > Finance & Commissions.
- Go to Commission Structures.
- Click the + icon.
- Add the name of the structure and click Save.
Once the structure exists, you can set its base fee and add tiers.
What Base Fee Options Are Available?
There are four base fee types to choose from:
- Fixed Amount - the commission is a set dollar amount regardless of the sale price.
- Fixed Percentage - the commission is a set percentage regardless of the sale price.
- Highest Win - you enter both a fixed amount and a fixed percentage, and Rex uses whichever produces the higher dollar figure.
- Lowest Win - you enter both a fixed amount and a fixed percentage, and Rex uses whichever produces the lower dollar figure.
How Do I Add Tiers to a Structure?
To add tiers, click the red + icon for Add Tier.
Rex fills in the From field for you each time, based on where the previous tier ended:
- With no tiers added yet, the From field shows $0.
- With one tier added covering $0 to $250,000, the next tier you add starts at $250,001.
⚠️ Please Note: Tiers here are based on the sale price, not on an agent's running total. If you are trying to increase an agent's percentage as they earn more across the year, that is an Agent Sliding Scale rather than a tiered commission structure.
How Do I Check a Structure Before I Use It?
Use Commission Preview. When you click it, a dialogue box appears where you enter an example sale price. Click Calculate and Rex shows you how the structure resolves for that figure.
This is worth doing on any structure using Highest Win, Lowest Win or multiple tiers, because it shows you which side of a threshold a given sale price lands on.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Commission Structure and an Agent Sliding Scale?
A Commission Structure calculates the agency's commission from the sale price. An Agent Sliding Scale calculates an individual agent's share from the commission they have accumulated over a commission period. They are separate features and can be used together.
Do I have to create a Commission Structure?
No. You can enter the gross commission manually on each worksheet. A structure exists to save you that repeated entry.
Will editing a structure change commission worksheets that already exist?
No. Worksheets keep the figures they were calculated with. A change to a structure applies to worksheets created after the change.
Can I have more than one commission structure?
Yes. You can create as many as you need and choose which one applies on each worksheet.
What is the difference between Highest Win and Lowest Win?
Both need a fixed amount and a fixed percentage entered. Highest Win uses whichever comes out higher in dollars, Lowest Win uses whichever comes out lower.
Where do I apply the structure once it is built?
On a commission worksheet, created from a listing in Finance Mode. See Financials & Commissions: Introduction to Commissions (Commission Worksheets).
